The Great War (Beta) is an ambitious multi-level solo adventure that was unfortunately never completed. This is the beta version of the map, some levels are not complete and some only work on a mac, but what is there is quite good. I spent hours on the first level alone - very nicely done. [ed]

Here is the official announcement about the map.

TGW Finally Released (Sort Of)...

TGW is a seven (!) level solo campaign set 5 years before Bungie's Myth: The Fallen Lords, and features new units, new maps, new story, and a return to Myth: TFL style gameplay without sacrificing Myth II's improved physics engine.

After a long wait, The Great War is finally released, sort of. The web site is gone, but let's see if I can remember the original idea: TGW was supposed to take place sometime after Balor is first seen, and sometime before the events in TFL; and this project was boasting a few new units and 8 solo levels. The TGW campaign was announced over two years ago, by the way. However, since then, the mapmaking group, Cartographers of Myth, have disbanded; and their websites have disappeared. TGW was never finished.

As a beta, only 5 of the levels are finished, however the other 2 are also included for you to see what we had in mind. Also note that some of the levels lack pregames and/or postgames. Most important however is that level 1 has a PC crash bug roughly 1/2 of the way through it (on Macs there are no stability issues). Level 1 is still a recommended play to PC users who can accept not finishing the level because it is one of the better ones.I think that's about it. If you don't see any TGW maps when you click New Game, be sure to hold down the space bar as you click it and then scroll down to the bottom of the list. The TGW maps themselves are in order from top to bottom, they are just located beneath all the standard Bungie levels.

Myth: The Great War
beta 7

Myth: TGW was the Cartographers of Myth's big push for a big thing, but interest in making it waned before it could reach completion. The end result is this: beta 7. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what TGW is, it is a 7 level solo campaign set prior to Myth: The Fallen Lords. Although the plot begins in typical Light vs Dark fashion, it quickly spins off into a story about a squad who discover that everything they know is wrong, in a land far far away, in a world where myth was king, etc etc. Side note: the movie Comedian looks like it's going to be very, very funny: http://www.apple.com/trailers/miramax/comedian.html.

Some of you guys might want installation instructions or something. Here goes: take the TGW b7 plugin and put it in the plugins folder in your Myth 2 folder. Then fire up Myth 2 and click New Game. Look for a level title in fancy colors down at the bottom, that's probably it. If you don't see it, then hit cancel, then click on New Game while holding down the spacebar. Then scroll down to the bottom of the list and open up the highest level in fancy colors because that's level 1 of Myth: TGW. If you're on a PC you might want to skip ahead to level 2 because level 1 has a PC crash bug. More on that later.

There are a few things worth noting, and I'll do them on a level-by-level basis. Needless to say this is BETA 7 for a reason. The levels are not finished but most of them are close enough to only have a few small bugs. No guarantee is made on pregame/postgames either. Some levels have them, some levels don't, and some levels shove poorly-indexed funny-looking images up your nose.

Level 1:

scripted by Datax, colormapped by Phish, and later everything thrown into a tizzy by Blambi messing around. Well, at least he managed to change just where the PC crash bug happened. If you're on a PC, you'll be able to play about 1/4 to 1/2 of this level. It's a fun one (I tell no liez), so if you don't mind Myth quitting on you then you should check it out.

Level 2:

scripted by Mumbles, colormapped by Phish, and (again!) everything thrown into a tizzy by Blambi. Then Mumbles came back and messed with it, and then Blambi did, and together they made a level that was really weird in the first place slightly more weird. Here's a hint: when you see a winch, shoot it. No ifs, no buts, if you see a little crank and a chain you should shoot it. Even if you don't think you can, there's a way.

Level 3:

scripted by Mumbles, colormapped by Phish, stuff finished up (and amazingly not destroyed) by Blambi. This level is one of the most complete, and those of you who like the dwarf levels in TFL won't be disappointed.

Level 4:

scripted by Blambi, colormapped by Blambi, new models by Vista. Occasionally weird things happen during the final battle. More often somebody just sees it working and thinks something weird is happening. Either way just go with the flow and jump to the next level.

Level 5:

scripted by Mumbles, colormapped by Phish, some stuff broken and some stuff fixed by Blambi. This level is arguably the most complete.

Level 6:

scripted by Blambi, colormapped by Blambi. Ignore this level. It had been going through a re-colormapping stage because the first one sucked, and the new colormap featured a completely new design and level layout. The theme persisted, but really this level has little to do with what was intended to be released in its place. That said, you can play about the first 1/4 of this level if you don't try to break stuff.

Level 7:

scripted by no one, colormapped by Phish. The big finish. Dams bursting, monsters that grabbed your units and pulled them screaming into deep water, cave-ins, and evil spiders. It was all meant to be, but unfortunately very little/none of it is. This is included only for those who are curious, there is absolutely nothing to play.

And there you have it. The credits above are not full, I should say. Here are the Cartographers of Myth, in alphabetical order (god I hope I didn't forget anyone, it's been a while. If you were in CoM and I forgot you then I'm really sorry =-\ ):

Blambi
Cunbelin
CyberBob
Datax
Mumbles
Phish
Webscreamer

and let's not forget CoM's now-retired founder, Sobo!

Also wod'asini made the new unit, you'll know it when you see it. Thanks man, and thanks for sitting through our bickering and redesigning his staff like we wanted!

I'm not sure who made the models for Jinn over at Vista, but whoever did gets credit for a couple of things in level 4. That whole group over there is/was awesome. Spoeaking of Jinn and Vista, Blambi would like to make a shout-out to Troll for taking him through the scripting process roughly two thousand and twelve times. He'd also like to give a big thanks to everyone who supported CoM, TGW, and the pursuit of happiness. You guys rock.

Once again I'm really hoping that I didn't forget anyone.

Oh yeah, there should also be some sort of legal disclaimer about how Bungie owns Fear and Loathing or something, but since the MS buyout I STILL don't know what I'm supposed to say, so let's just say that Fear and Loathing were used in the creation of this plugin and CoM does not take responsibility for making Fear and Loathing. Does that sound good? If it doesn't then let's say that Take2 owns the lot, but then nobody really likes Take2 so that's not quite right either. I guess I'll just take the advice of Meher Baba on this one: don't worry, be happy.
